Aquatic ecosystems provide numerous vital resources for living organisms, specifically for aquatic communities such as macroinvertebrates, which are considered environmental bioindicators. However, anthropogenic factors have negatively influenced the attributes of aquatic communities in lotic environments, especially those of small size. Among these factors, the construction of dams stands out, as it directly or indirectly alters all aspects of the lotic system where they are inserted. This study aimed to analyze and compare the composition of the benthic macroinvertebrate assemblage upstream and downstream of a dam and verify whether the organisms found along the sampled stretches represent a nested pattern. Limnological variables are relevant aspects for the nested patterns of benthic assemblages. We observed that the arrangement of the groups follows a nested pattern such that the assemblage at the last points is a subset of the first ones, and this pattern may be related to the dam and the environmental conditions of the conservation unit. The degree of conservation and anthropogenic interference around the stream is a factor that needs to be considered when analyzing the distribution of benthic macroinvertebrates. Areas with greater diversity of physical habitats provide shelter and more resources for organisms, favoring nesting. In this regard, conservation areas, especially those near urban centers, are environments that deserve attention due to their ecological importance.
